Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to commonly asked questions about the Strength for Life programs.
Will I get big muscles like a weightlifter?
No. Strength for Life helps you build your abilities safely, but you won’t grow large muscles. The exercises are gentle and designed to help with daily movement, not body building.
I have a health condition. Can I still join?
Yes. Many people with health conditions join Strength for Life. The exercises are safe and can help improve or manage conditions like arthritis, diabetes, and blood pressure. You will receive a program that suits your needs.
Will someone show me how to do the exercises?
Yes. A qualified instructor will show you how to do the exercises safely. An instructor is always there during sessions to guide and support you, unless you are participating in Strength for Life At Home, which is self-managed.
Do I have to join a gym?
Not always. Most providers offer single-visit passes or 10-visit cards. Some providers may offer memberships if that works out cheaper.
I’ve never exercised before. Is it safe for me?
Yes. Strength for Life is aimed at people aged 50+. The exercises are supervised and low risk, even if you’ve never exercised before.
How do I join a class?
- Find a Strength for Life provider near you
- Complete the Enrolment Form and Screening Form given to you by the provider
- If needed, ask your doctor to fill out the referral section
- Call the provider to book your first health check or first class and bring your forms with you
